He dismounted and shook my father's hand
Oh I thought him so handsome and grand
And when he laughed I felt his power
His deep voice a soft spring shower
Sun shone bright on his blazing red hair
And I still a child innocent and fair
Stunned by the feelings new to me
Gazing upon a man such as he

Later that evening; when dinner was done
I sat on the porch watched the last drops of sun
The Rider came nigh whispered my name
I was a bit stunned not knowing his aim
His words were lively and I sat enthralled
He leaned ever closer my fear dissolved
The Rider he spoke of a creek that he knew
Daybreak a mountain a wonder to view

He told me of places beyond any dream
Then came a notion well really a scheme
Later we rose in the dark of the night
And trekked for the creek before the first light
The night air was cold I took a quilt I had made
And there on the hillside together we laid
My heart was on fire and my joy was complete
One day in heaven one meeting so sweet

A wedding was mustered and that Rider was mine
My destiny clear Our days would be fine

The Circuit Rider stayed near a month in our town
The day that he left all souls wore a frown
I’m on my own, long distance long nights
And he is out a ridin’ the circuit recites
A widow not widowed my life it is lean
Feels like forever I’m barely eighteen
I know I have something precious and rare
A splendid young son with brilliant red hair

Thirty years he rode and now my Rider’s gone
Though he kept on riding I was not alone
My son how he’s grown So handsome so strong
But I know I can’t keep him That would be wrong
The circuit has claimed him He’s his father’s son
I know he’ll keep riding The work is not done
My destiny’s clear My days will be fine
